The fourth annual SMI Teachers’ Workshop will be held on the RIT campus, Monday through Thursday of the week before the July 4 weekend.  The workshop is sponsored by Xerox Corporation and Eastman Kodak Company. Once again the program will stress the two basic topics that high school teachers tell us are of most interest to them: How high school math is used in professions, and how college courses build on high school math.  Many professionals and co-op students are among this year’s confirmed speakers:

John Adam, Old Dominion University

Mathematics in Nature

Chuck Hinkel, Rochester Red Wings

Mathematics/Statistics in Baseball

Elizabeth Cherry, Rochester Institute of Technology

Cardiac Arrhythmias

The workshop is free, thanks to the support of Xerox and Kodak.  Please don’t register unless you’re sure that you want to attend; in the past we’ve had the unfortunate combination of a long waiting list of teachers who wanted to attend but couldn’t, and many who registered but didn’t show up.  Please forward this announcement to any teachers who might want to attend.

For those of you coming from out of town, here are links to some local hotels.  The Radisson http://www.radisson.com/hotels/nyrochrd is on the RIT campus, so it’s convenient.  It’s about a ten minute walk from the Radisson to the location of the workshop, and there’s bus service.

There’s also bus service from the RIT Inn and Conference Center.  The RIT Inn is run by RIT but, paradoxically, is not on the campus.  It’s a bit less expensive than the Radisson:www.ritinn.com

The town of Scottsville is 10 to 15 minutes away along the Genesee River.  If you’re driving, you could stay there, you’ll probably find less expensive (and more picturesque) accommodations there.

This link contains a much longer list of local hotels and inns:

If you have questions about the workshop, please write or call.
